The pursuit of Freedom
What is Freedom?
According to Merriam-Webster’s first definition; freedom is, “the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action.”
It; ‘Freedom’ is a very ambiguous word and means many things to many people, as a slave on a boat from Africa to UK in 1780 it means to be able to just get away from your captives and just get home. To a Businessman today it could mean a few million dollars.
Many would believe the average person lives in a ‘free society’, well yes compared to 300 years ago we are, but I believe we are more ‘mentally enslaved’ today.
Think of the messages we consume on a daily basis, we are seeing more and more due to the fact that the powers that be and the advertising world don’t really need you to listen on a conscious level any more, then need your subconscious brain, that is what they are selling to, these hidden messages we digest but don’t see, tell us who to vote for, what sort of person we should be, what furniture to sit on, where to live, what car to drive, what college we should attend, and for woman exactly how you should look, anything else is left wanting. That is antithesis of Freedom to me.
I personally would like to meet the man who convinced the world:
“We should leave education, get a job and work for a boss till we are 65 then get a pension”
Damn near cult status whoever he was, as he able to get the majority of people to go out and do exactly that! I would like to invite him to sit in a car on the M6 motorway at 7 am on a Monday morning and get him to look at the faces of people and ask;
is this freedom? Is this the pursuit of happiness?
“Instead of dreaming about a holiday for two weeks a year, go and create the life you have really dreamed of”
What’s stopping you really?
Do you have the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint?
They say that we do have some freedom of choice and that the last freedom is the freedom of our own thoughts.
Emotionally we need to feel whatever we want and to accept our own feelings and the feelings of others.
Do you have any rules about feelings?
Some people think that they shouldn’t feel anger, some hate feeling sad, or must not feel this way or that way.
It’s best not to follow any rules about feelings as this will also help to free yourself from negative emotions and also negative people.
Most people see intellectual freedom as the right freedom of thought or freedom to express thoughts.
And even the freedom to seek, receive, hold and disseminate information without restriction. But what is the real point if it doesn’t free us to use or create the life we really desire.
The freedom of effort and discipline can provide the opportunity to contribute to society and make a real difference in the lives of others.
These are just a few freedoms that we wish to obtain through life time achievement.
