North Devon’s Golden Coast: Why Woolacombe is the Ultimate Holiday Base

Travel and holidays

When people think of British bucket-and-spade holidays, North Devon often takes the crown. With its rolling Atlantic surf, rugged coastal paths, and vast expanses of golden sand, it’s a slice of paradise that rivals the Caribbean (minus the tropical heat, of course). If you are planning a trip to this stunning region, there is no better place to anchor your adventure than Woolacombe Beach.

As a guest of Southover Beach, you are literally steps away from one of the best-rated beaches in Europe. But the beauty of North Devon is its variety. Staying in Woolacombe puts you at the center of a coastline filled with hidden coves, family-friendly splash zones, and dog-welcoming stretches. Here is your guide to the best beaches nearby, and the top pubs and activities to round off your day.

The Anchor: Woolacombe Beach

Let’s start with your front garden. Woolacombe Beach is a three-mile stretch of clean, flat sand backed by dunes. It is the perfect base because it suits every mood. In the morning, it’s a surfer’s paradise with consistent swells. By midday, it turns into a family fortress where kids can safely paddle for what feels like miles without getting out of their depth.

The facilities here are top-notch—clean toilets, surf schools, and hire shops for wetsuits and boards. Because you are staying at Southover Beach, popping back for lunch or to swap a towel takes minutes, not hours. It truly is the luxury of location.

Best nearby beaches for families

While Woolacombe is king, young children sometimes love a change of scenery. Two beaches nearby are exceptional for families:

Saunton Sands (10 minutes south)
Saunton is Woolacombe’s quieter big sister. It is massive, meaning you never feel crowded, even in August. The beach shelves very gently, creating huge tidal pools when the water goes out—natural swimming pools perfect for toddlers to paddle in. Behind the beach lies Braunton Burrows, a UNESCO biosphere reserve perfect for a post-lunch “sand dune safari.”

Putsborough Sands (5 minutes south)
Technically the southern end of Woolacombe beach but accessed via a separate car park at the bottom of a steep hill. It is often less windy than the main bay and offers dramatic views of Baggy Point. Families love it for the rock pooling at low tide; you can find crabs and shrimp in the rocky edges near the point.

The Best Dog-Friendly Beaches

We know the family isn’t complete without the four-legged member. North Devon is very dog-friendly, but there are seasonal restrictions (usually Easter to October) on the main sands.

Croyde Bay (10 minutes south)
Croyde is a mecca for surfers, but it is also a wonderful dog beach outside of summer restrictions. Even in summer, the surrounding National Trust headlands are open. Take the dog for a run along the cliffs before descending to the sand. The vibe here is laid-back and muddy—perfect for a tired spaniel.

Saunton Sands (Winter & Shoulder seasons)
Double down on Saunton. During the summer, dogs are restricted to a specific section near the Braunton Burrows end, but it’s a very long, wide section. In the off-season (October to April), the entire three-mile stretch opens up. There is nothing quite like watching your Labrador chase the waves against the backdrop of a winter sunset.

Best Pubs for a Post-Beach Pint

A day on the sand builds a mighty thirst. Here is where to refuel:

  • The Rock Inn (Georgeham): Just a five-minute drive inland. This is arguably the best gastropub in the area. Fireplaces in winter, a sunny garden in summer, and award-winning food. Their fish pie is legendary.
  • The Barn (Woolacombe): For the ultimate convenience. Located right on the beachfront, you can literally walk off the sand and enjoy a sundowner, the view of the sunset over the bay is unmatched.
  • The Thatch (Croyde): A famous thatched pub that looks like it belongs in a chocolate box. It gets busy, but the beer garden is massive and welcomes dogs.

Things to Do (On and Off the Sand)

  • Surfing: Hire a board from Steve’s Surf Hire. If you are new, book a lesson at “Woolacombe Surf Centre.”
  • The South West Coast Path: Walk from Woolacombe to Mortehoe. It’s only a 45-minute hike to Bull Point Lighthouse, but you’ll see seals basking on the rocks below in autumn.
  • Skip the car: One of the best things about a Southover Beach base is you arrive, park the car leave the car keys behind and enjoy the many local walks.  The traffic in Woolacombe gets heavy in July & August.

The Verdict

Don’t waste your holiday driving between different car parks. Base yourself at Woolacombe. You get the best of both worlds: a world-class beach on your doorstep for early morning swims, and the close by options (Croyde, Saunton, Putsborough) just ten minutes away when you want variety.

Whether you are building sandcastles with toddlers or throwing a stick for your dog in the Atlantic surf, North Devon’s coastline delivers. Book your stay with the dog and family friendly apartments at Southover Beach, pack your wetsuit, and prepare to fall in love with the Golden Coast.
